For many, travelling with a motorhome means unlimited freedom. If you want to combine a camping holiday with an active holiday, or if you want to explore the surroundings flexibly from the campsite, you often use a bicycle. Whether with an e-bike, racing bike, mountain bike or gravel bike, your holiday offers you opportunities to expand your radius once again and go on a discovery tour.

But what do you have to bear in mind beforehand in order to be able to start your cycling pleasure directly from the campsite? Cycling professional Florian Nowak has a few tips to make your camping trip with a bike as pleasant as possible.

About Flo Nowak

Florian Nowak (*26 January 1995 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen) is a former German cyclist and active outdoor athlete. After his time as a professional athlete, he dedicated himself to gravel biking and gained attention through successful challenges and projects with the gravel bike. On his gravel bike competitions, Flo Nowak travels with a Carado support vehicle. So in this guidebook, he not only draws on his bike knowledge, but also reports as a camping professional.

Route planner:

Of course, just like motorhomes, bikes offer a great way to travel easily and flexibly. However, if you are planning an active biking holiday with a motorhome, you should take a look at the routes in the region in advance and pick out possible tours. With the help of cycling apps such as Komoot or Strava and common maps on your smartphone, you can choose the best pitch as a starting point for the tours and make a better choice of bike (e-bike, road bike, etc.) and tyres.

Radequipment:

The right equipment for your days on the bike is crucial. In addition to basic equipment such as an air pump, bike lock, spare tyre/tube, chain oil and minitool, you should also think about weatherproof clothing and personal protective equipment.

Weather forecast:

A look at the weather forecast will help you pack your cycling clothes accordingly. In addition to the usual set of jersey, cycling shorts, helmet and cycling shoes/sports shoes, a rain jacket should also be part of the mandatory equipment. Additional warm clothing for cold days or a change of clothes for hot days is recommended.

Load securing:

Precise planning of luggage distribution in the vehicle is important in order to securely fasten the bicycle to the motorhome. Special tension covers can keep the bike clean and protected during transport. For e-bikes with a removable battery, it is advisable to remove it before the journey to reduce the weight on the bike carrier.

Anti-theft device:

Securing the bicycle is of great importance. In addition to a small lock for trips out, you should also attach a lock for the bike to the bike carrier while driving. In addition, the country regulations regarding load securing and theft protection should be observed.

Cycling infrastructure:

It is worthwhile to get an overview of the infrastructure, shops and service stations that are helpful for cyclists. Many places offer free service stations for cyclists or washing facilities for bikes at the parking lot.

From a professional's point of view, with a little preparation in the individual areas, the trip will be much more enjoyable. Nevertheless, the freedom and flexibility is what makes it so appealing, so you shouldn't think too much about every possible scenario here either. After all, this is sure to bring one or two exciting adventures.
